Personal choice..
Energy use is apparently a “decision for individuals”, says the government and Liz Truss, rather like eating, drinking or breathing the air.
This desperate attempt to maintain, what is seen by the current Tory party as individual responsibility, when the very system the population depends on is collapsing is pathetic.
It is however the natural culmination of “there is no such thing as society”.
We have given you the tax cuts now look after yourself.
Except we don’t have lower taxes, nor do we have a functioning market for many things; water is a polluting monopoly, there are no affordable sources of energy, nor can we just shop around for cheaper food.
Even in a country with a government which is completely uncaring and callous, they have, at least, to justify their callousness by ensuring a fair and open economy that works for all.
They have done the opposite and still think that any consequences are the fault of the undeserving poor.
This is where unthinking devotion to Thatcherism gets you, all the nastiness and none of the competence or zeal to reform broken markets. They can’t even see that the markets are broken or that they have a role in fixing them or ameliorating the consequences.
The poor and even reasonably well off will face destitution this winter if nothing is done, through no fault of their own.
The government is responsible for what will happen, whether it wants to be or not.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
