It is hard to sympathise with George Osborne. Apparently he was devastated by the result of the referendum result on Brexit, knowing that it was not just a disaster for the country but also the end of his political career.
For a start if he thought the result would be so disastrous why did he allow the government to hold a referendum? Pure arrogance on his and Lord Cameron’s part seems the most likely. But also a complete disregard for the good of the country.
Game theory alone would tell you that if losing is an utter disaster, then don’t play the game.
Then, if you are stupid enough to call a referendum, make sure you win it. Make sure Gove and Johnson will stay on your side, don’t hold it in the middle of an austerity drive, make sure Labour will turn up to campaign for you, throw out Cabinet members who lie.
None of these things were done, it was not just incompetent, it was wilful endangerment, the country could not and cannot afford Brexit; Remain had to win for the greater good and it and Osborne failed.
And he hadn’t even prepared for a Leave vote, the ultras took over and negotiated a terrible Brexit. We had been promised membership of the Single Market; we got nothing of the sort. He could have stayed and fought for what was promised.
But Mr. Osborne went out and got himself several very well paid jobs and sat back and watched the millions flow in and the Tory party civil war continues to this day.
He hasn’t really suffered, except he wanted to be PM and now never will be, he instead made a fortune. He has not felt anything of the icy blast of Brexit that has hit so much of the country and never will.
He is responsible, to a very large degree, for everything that has followed. The useless PMs, the bad deal, the lies, the loss of power and influence, the huge economic damage.
As I said, it is hard to sympathise with poor George.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

100% on the nail. And he won’t even get a chance to come back unlike his partner in crime the Lord Cameron
He’s one of our foremost failures.
Played the game with house money for all time and tripped into more and more of it as he left the wreckage behind.
The fact he feels able to opine about anything tells us everything about him.
Not a shred of decency - just base cunning and disdain.
