I never promised you...
I can never listen to journalists covering a British PM’s visit to the White House without remembering the episode of Yes Prime Minister about the same scenario.
The PM has been persuaded to abolish the UK’s nuclear arsenal until he learns this has disappointed the Yanks so much that his upcoming visit to the States won’t include a visit to the Oval Office, but just to the Rose Garden.
The snub is too much to bear and he keeps Trident.
Today I hear that Rishi Sunak will be honoured by a joint press conference with President Biden, when doubtless UK hacks will queue up to ask the US President about the “special relationship”.
Just once I would like the President to say he’s never heard of it, or it died years ago, just to see the look on the PM’s face.
The desperate gratitude for the bones that the White House throws to UK politicians is really quite nauseating. Brexit having made the UK less useful to the USA the gratitude will doubtless get more and more oleaginous or maybe the bones will be smaller.
But surely not the Rose Garden.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
