You'd be better off with a shotgun.
There are too few details available about the government’s plans to help pay for fuel this winter and beyond. But the first thing we can see is that this ridiculous system throws money at the problem in an appallingly inefficient way.
Giving energy companies guaranteed unearned mega-profits paid for by hundreds of billions of borrowed money the tax payer will have to repay is mad enough.
But by subsidising all energy use the government is, of course, giving more money to the people who need it least, the rich. And proportionally less to the ones who need it most the poor.
Many wealthy people will literally fail to notice if their fuel bills double, the poorest will be wiped out even under this scheme.
Firing the money out of a shotgun would have been fairer and distributed the money more evenly.
It is patently obvious the government has panicked, is ideologically hidebound and incompetent.
Hundreds of billions in debt and the rich benefit most? You could not have made this up, no one would have believed you.
The quicker the UK gets back to some proper legislative scrutiny the better.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
