You turn if you want to ....
It is difficult to decide whether the EU’s response to Lord Frost’s threats has been studied indifference or quiet fury, but the message is simple. We can help you get out of the mess you have got yourself into by being flexible but we are not renegotiating a treaty you called for, wanted, needed, negotiated, passed and ratified less than a year ago.
Oh, and by the way; the Single Market is most important thing we do, we will never weaken it or put it under threat.
Since it takes a bare minimum of two to renegotiate a treaty this creates an impasse, to put it mildly. So what does the government do? Back down with as much blustering Bunteresque bluffing as possible, bulwarked by the Brexit press.
Or tear up the treaty and start a trade war with our nearest and most important trading partners. This too will be covered by blustering, lies, and accusations of Brussels betrayal and interference but it will hurt.
Unfortunately for the UK fantasy politics gets pretty dangerous, pretty quickly when it bumps into the real world. The fact is the UK can’t win a trade war with the EU.
