Worth every penny........
The Minister for Brexit Opportunities seems to think tearing up the Northern Ireland Protocol is the way ahead. He told MPs that if the EU would not reform the Protocol, the UK would.
His understanding of international law is pathetically lacking which is really worrying as he has no shortage of expert lawyers who must be telling him exactly what the law says and means. There is no one so blind as he who won’t see.
The Protocol, like all treaties, has a clause for reform and re-negotiation but that requires the approval of both sides. Unilateral change is just breaking the law, except in exceptional circumstances, none of which apply to the Protocol.
So the important question is: Does Mr Rees-Mogg really believe this rubbish or is he just sabre rattling ahead of local elections?
With the PM’s desperate need for diversions to deflect attention from his criminal activities, it would be wise to assume he means it.
A trade war with the EU might serve the PM’s purpose.
But, it would mean tariffs, economic damage, basically a hard Brexit.
A price worth paying to save the PM’s skin.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
