Last night on Question Time, we had the usual rants about asylum seekers from the panel and the audience. It reminds me of a time BBC 5Live did a story on the Kindertransport, during which only Jewish children, (not their parents who were murdered in huge numbers by the Nazis), and who would never be a burden on the state because they were sponsored by individuals, were allowed to flee the Nazis in the late 1930s.
The story ended with the presenter saying how the country had opened its arms to take in refugees at the worst of times. Which is obviously the complete opposite of the truth.
Driven by politicians’ anti-semitism and a right wing press that was openly pro-Nazis, racist and white supremacist, this country acted shamefully, closed its borders and turned away the desperate; they were slaughtered in appalling ways as a result.
We left millions to die in gas chambers and then in a typical British fashion we patted ourselves on the back because we helped a very few children, or a few heroes got some Jews out by the skin of their teeth by breaking the law and risking death and their careers.
People who the if the Daily Mail had found out what they were doing would have been vilified and persecuted with utter venom until they were fired, prosecuted and jailed, no wonder they worked in secret.
Now those bigots and scum bags are back, the lessons of the 1930’s are forgotten, the shame and consequences of letting the far right dictate policy ignored and the consequences of that world are back to haunt us again.
Members of Reform are happy to stand and watch babies drown in the Channel, introduce it as a government policy and boast about it.
Think about that, even the Kindertransport would never have happened, they would have thrown the children into the Channel to drown.
Worse than the 1930’s, welcome to the future.

Bloody hell, Jonty - hell of a way to start the weekend (albeit that sadly you’re quite right)
