The PM is down but not out which is worrying.
First, the PM could still fight like a rat in a trap and try to hang on. Never under estimate the ego of this PM. He might be quite willing to bring the house down around his ears rather than surrender. Its not like he can leave with dignity any longer so why not destroy as much as possible on the way out?
If he does that the obvious thing to do is to start a trade war, with the EU. The PM could wrap himself in the flag, tear up the NIP and try to appeal as a true Brit standing up to Brussels. Fortunately or unfortunately the head of the negotiations with the EU is the Foreign Secretary; who wants his job. So that might be a constraint.
But third and most frightening is that the Brexit ultras in the ERG have taken over the Tory party and any new candidate will have to win their support. Liz Truss could lose the battle to be PM if she appeared to appease the EU.
Either the PM uses Brexit to survive or his successor uses it to get elected.
Either way would make things worse, but I just can’t see the Tory party being lead by a sensible, pragmatic and realistic leader.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
I have no problem with Boris, all you lefties do. We knew when we took him on what he was like and we still took him on, because he was willing to grasp the nettle that no one else was willing to. And the grey spitting image puppet of Sir Tony, Kier Starmer never went to a party?
