Where to.......
Leaving the ECHR has no benefits at all for the UK, we established and have stayed members ever since, but not because we needed much outside regulation of our human rights, or at least not until now.
We and every other democratic, decent and moral European states did so to set an example to the world and encourage other countries to gradually follow suit. Since every country bar Russia is a member, and it handcuffs innocent civilians and shoots them in the back of the head, this seems to be working.
So let’s be clear, we are leaving, after one cancelled flight, because this immoral bunch of English Nationalists want to pick another fight with an organisation with the word European in its title.
Any fight will do for these people and any populist policy will do if it means they can stay in power.
Since the ECHR bans capital punishment we can see where this is leading. The Home Secretary is already on the record as a supporter of executing criminals.
Why not run an election campaign on “Labour wants child murderers to live a life of luxury at your expense” or “The Lib Dems want murderers let out to kill again” or “Want to encourage terrorism, vote SNP?”.
After all killing a few people is a small price to pay for another 5 years in power.
Even executing the innocent by mistake is worth it, we don’t need human rights. Not when we have a fine tradition of issuing posthumous pardons.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
