When will they move?
The utterly terrible news that possibly hundreds of men, women and children have died after a grossly overloaded boat of migrants was abandoned by its crew near Greece, is shocking. Can you imagine their terror?
But you had better get used to it.
Today people are fleeing war zones and poverty but with climate change accelerating this is going to happen more and more. People are not going to wait until their country becomes a desert, they will move long before that.
When the poor land becomes unworkable, when the cities are unbearable, when the handouts fail to arrive, it will be far, far too late.
The upper and middle classes will move first, because they can and they can see what is happening. Then the poorer will try to follow, tens of millions of them.
They will head North, where it is cooler and countries are richer.
Has anyone really thought what will happen if Egypt, Libya, Algeria and Morocco become uninhabitable? Let alone India, Pakistan and Bangladesh?
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
