You have to hand it to the Tory party they don’t know when they are beaten, but unfortunately for them, not in the good way. They think they are rebounding from a huge defeat and have picked themselves up, dusted themselves down and are back in the fight. Nothing could be further from the truth.
They have been decimated, humiliated, humbled and thrown out of office, but they act as if it is a temporary set back and the world is still their oyster. No one cares what they think at the moment, Labour are entitled to a honeymoon, they have won a huge majority and have every right to blame the last government for the mess they have inherited.
It is traditional for opposition parties in such circumstances to keep their powder dry, intervene only when they have something useful to say our the government is getting its very wrong and to try to sort out their own mess.
This means serious analysis of where the went wrong, a new agenda, new policies, and a purge of the ultras who drove them over the cliff.
Labour have done it numerous times, but then the Tories haven’t. They learnt nothing from the ousting of Margaret Thatcher and John Major but just moved ever rightward.
They are trying to do this again, with supposedly senior and serious candidates for the Tory leadership doubling down on leaving the ECHR, leaving the WHO (covid nutters hate the WHO), any other international body they can think of, throwing themselves at Trump’s feet, and making Brexit work. That means making it worse and drowning babies in the Channel.
A better way of staying in opposition it is hard to think of, some silence, introspection, common sense, honest self appraisal and decency would help them but they are beyond help.
At this rate sensible Tories will be crossing the floor to the Lib Dems pretty soon, while the swivel eyed loons desert to Reform, or take over the party and merge with Reform.
If anyone thinks that is the way back to power, they are mad.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

“silence, introspection, common sense, honest self appraisal and decency” - fat f*****g chance of any of that. Truss and bojo wanging on at the Rep Convention (albeit, derisively, to virtually empty meetings) give a taste of more to come. Truss alleging the ‘leftist deep state’ caused her to fail (that would be those well-known socialist currency traders, ffs). Still, at least they were far from home - long may they stay there
Looking forward to ‘sideways’ crossings. Doubt there will be any pure floor crossing just yet
