What happened to Thatcherism?
The latest announcement from the Business Secretary that now, free of EU rules and regs, the UK would be free to subsidise industry more raises the question; What happened to Thatcherism?
Lady Thatcher achieved quite a few things, the most important was probably the creation of the Single Market, which did not survive her children coming to power.
Then there was the “no picking winners” mantra. It was never as pure as it sounded, it was PM Thatcher who attracted Nissan to Sunderland in the first place. Tempted by lots of free money from the taxpayer and membership of the Single Market.
But that mantra has been killed by Brexit as well, after all if you are a less attractive place to do business, you have to subsidise business more.
