What a win......
Sir Jeffrey Donaldson had a very interesting article in the Sunday Telegraph yesterday. Being the first Ulster Unionist to lose an election in exactly 100 years might, you think, have given him pause for thought.
But no, apparently he has won a mandate to destroy the North Ireland Protocol, and it must die before anything else can happen. The fact that the Tory government that got him, NI, the UK and itself in this mess is now supporting him is also deeply worrying.
Both the deputy prime minister, and the foreign secretary have been ramping up the rhetoric, blaming the EU and claiming that the UK has the right to tear up an international treaty. One it negotiated 2 years ago and which it won a general election campaigning for.
Playing silly party politics with the peace in NI is shameless. NI voted to stay in the EU, only 40% of voters backed unionist parties.
The DUP lost and the Westminster government is hurrying to give them what they want, not because of principle but because picking another fight with Brussels appeals to its core voters.
Six years after the Brexit vote and this is what the UK government is reduced to.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
