What a fool I've been
I was reading some stupid commentary from a thick as mince Brexiteer the other day, it was calling for the UK to withdraw from the ECHR, and any other human rights body that might stop the UK dumping asylum seekers in Channel or my new favourite, sending them to the Falklands.
And it struck me that not only would such a move destroy the Good Friday Agreement, and so win the undying love of the DUP, it would also effectively end any and all cooperation with the EU. Not just on asylum seekers but on defence, data transfers, and all the rest. The EC used Horizon to put pressure n the Westminster government to sign the Windsor Framework and it could and probably would do the same again.
Then, of course, I realised what their game is, because the Brexit ultras are thick but not lacking in cunning. Tearing up the ECHR, would finally burn all bridges with the EU, it would leave the UK alone, with no continental friends or allies, a moral and ethical leper.
And they want this to happen because they want to destroy any economic, political or social connections with Europe.
Whipping up the racists, treating refugees like cockroaches, replaying the 1930’s play book these are all just cream on top for the Brexit loons.
Human rights are a way of putting the UK beyond the Pale, and that makes the ultras very, very happy.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
