RTE seems in a right mess, it has called for austerity and belt tightening from its staff but not its to top stars. They have done nothing wrong but the broadcaster seems not to have declared how much they really earn.
Paying for “extra” work, paying the employee and their company as well, loyalty bonuses, image rights and the like. We know they are used and often for good reason but they are also good ways of hiding the fact that we are NOT all in this together.
The NHS, the police, the BBC, the civil service, and dozens of others have told us that they could not afford to pay staff as much as before.
But we all know of organisations where the staff have to suffer for the greater good but the management seems to need huge salaries and bonuses for the greater good.
What would happen if it turned out the ones making those demands were also finding ways of making sure they were alright, Jack?
Not just insisting that their salaries and bonuses are sacrosanct but hiding it, when they are telling the rest of us to suck it up and remember the Dunkirk spirit.
Knowing the quality of UK management and the vanity of the prima donnas I would put good money on the fact that it has been going on for years.
RTE may have done us a service.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

The RTÉ scandal has been a big stain on an otherwise largely successful post-Lockdown era for Ireland.
The story broke on a Wednesday, by the following Wednesday RTÉ executives had been before a parliamentary committee answering questions about it (or failing to do so when the question is ‘do you know how much you earn?’).
Compare to the hoops that need to be jumped through months before the notion of an enquiry is even broached in the UK for similar levels of corruption.
And when investigations are announced they’re often treated as if that is the matter closed and it’s quietly swept under the carpet dismissed as a boring procedure that the public isn’t interested in.
