It was, I think, James Callaghan who said after the 1979 election something like “Sometimes there is just a sea change in politics and there is nothing you can do about it.”
But even if there is a sea change you might want to try to limit the damage, fight a rear guard action, go down with guns blazing.
So, when Mr. Sunak comes back from Normandy early to tell ITV that he did without Sky TV as a youth and so he understands how people who are struggling feel, you just know they have lost the plot and aren’t even trying anymore.
Winchester costs £50,000 a year, they must have had one hell of a Sky package.
Seriously, if you have been fortunate enough to go to one of the most expensive and best schools in the country which alone costs far more than average household earnings, telling people that you suffered as a child is really a non-starter.
You say you were lucky, your parents invested everything in you, that all parents do too but are not as fortunate as you and therefore you want to improve all the chances of all children, so they can have some of the opportunities that you had. ETC ETC
This is politics 101, it is a no brainer, or it should be, but it is impossible for someone without any emotional intelligence.
The same person who didn’t even think of staying in Normandy to have the honour of representing the nation and thanking the few remaining veterans is the same person who thinks not having Sky meant he had a deprived childhood. Both have happened because he has no empathy.
You can’t avoid being born wealthy, or benefitting from your parents help. But if you don’t realise you have been very lucky, that your life chances are far better than nearly everyone else’s as a result, that you have never had to struggle for the basics in life and have no experience at all in that area, you are arrogant, insensitive, self-centred, crass, and entitled.
Rishi Sunak has no emotional intelligence at all, none, he is incapable of swimming against this tide, because the electorate can see that.
Like psychopaths who have to pretend to cry because they can tell it is expected of them but have no idea why, he just does not get it.
And people now see that. He has been examined under the intense microscope of a general election and we can see him now.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

Definitely shows narcissistic characteristics....Not someone I'd like to be around much (and not someone who would handle crises well - their arrogance and contempt means they will be resistant to good advice).
