Top of the world, Ma. Top of the world.
I am once again indebted to Tony Connelly of RTE for his balanced, well researched and sourced, clear analysis of just what is happening in UK politics at the moment.
See it here https://www.rte.ie/news/2022/0604/1302945-ni-protocol-brexit/
The government is split on whether to give itself the power to break international law and threaten to tear up the Northern Ireland Protocol. Or whether to just pass the legislation that kills it stone dead, a move with disastrous and potentially very dangerous consequences.
The decision is, of course, not based on what is best for Northern Ireland or even the UK. It is based on which move will best secure the PM in his job. The more radical move will be red meat to the ERG, and the PM needs its MPs to either withdraw their letters calling for a leadership vote or to support him in that vote.
He will cause huge damage to the economy, destroy this country’s reputation for honesty and law abiding behaviour, start a trade dispute the UK can never win, threaten peace and progress in NI and kowtow to the ERG’s most extreme nutters.
He is cornered and very dangerous. Nothing else matters. The PM is ready to bring down the whole edifice of power and responsibility to last another few months at No. 10.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
