We are psychologically and materially dependent on America. America is a heavily militarised state with the result that it has poor public services and poor infrastructure. It's military hegemony has created an international order but at great cost to itself. Its championing of the global mobility of capital has significantly deindustrialised its domestic economy.

It is probably a mistake to believe there is logical consistency in Trump's outlook, but his campaign has responded to the insecurity of voters over these issues. He is against the global security role of the US. He is anti trade. He wants to reshore American industry. In some way he wants to "purify" America of what he sees as the internationalist influences of empire, both in terms of culture and migration.

Trump is an isolationist and is channelling the strain that empire has placed on domestic America. I suspect that over the next 2 years things will get a lot worse for Americans. But the upshot for Britain and Europe is that we will have to break that dependency and do a lot more for ourselves. This will be challenging and very interesting and needs to be approached creatively. The old order is gone now. Its signs of decay have been clear for some time. We need to create a better one. This will not be an economy that in its national numbers is materially richer. But it can be one that is better to live in.

Too negative. A transactional President does not discount something because he believes the contrary, if he believes in anything it is his power to do what he pleases.
