Too kind......
If only Lord Frost and the rest of the government had left a bench mark against which we could measure the success or failure of the deal they negotiated with the EU.
They did? How very kind of them!
They left Northern Ireland in the Single Market, which was originally what they said they would do for the whole of the UK. So we can check how things are going.
Funnily enough Northern Ireland, normally the weakest part of the British economy, has recovered best from the Covid lock down. It is just 0.3% from totally recovering lost output, way ahead of the next best performer London and the worst the West Midlands, which is 10% behind.
Not all of this is Brexit related and these are early days but this is what you would expect. NI is the one part of the UK that has the same benefits the rest of the country had before Brexit, namely free trade with the EU and the UK.
The only thing stopping it becoming a beacon for foreign investment is the fact that the DUP wants to tear up the NIP and end the province’s membership of the Single Market.
Lord Frost and the government should ignore them and leave this bench mark alone, so we can check the quality of their work.
Oh wait………
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
