This is deliberate.....
Like the frog that jumps out of the pan if you drop it in boiling water, but stays if you put it in cold water and gently heat it, the UK economy has been slowly cooking the poor.
IFS research shows that the top 1% of UK adults got 15% of fiscal income in 2018/19, their share in 1980 was 6% and 10% in 1990.
This is a deliberate policy, Thatcherites call it rewarding hard work and incentivising ambition, but it also makes workers cheaper to hire and fire and increasingly poor. Reducing benefits, destroying union power and cutting taxes for the wealthy is the policy and this is the result
The right likes to talk about how this isn’t really happening and that “a rising tide lifts all boats”. But a rising tide lifts all boats by the same amount, the current system lifts gin palaces with two helipads all the time and leaves the worn out dinghy stranded on the stinking mud flats.
Changing this is easy economically but very difficult politically because the debate has been shifted to the right for decades. It has taken high inflation to expose the damage but it has been gently going on for decades and there is currently nothing to stop it continuing.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
