They do need us, more than we need them
Hurray, final proof that the EU needs us more than we need them. A top german business leader told me the other day that before Brexit 3 out of the top 10 universities in the world were in the EU and now none are. And that worries him.
Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial are the three and the EU would really like access to them. But not so much that it was willing to let them take part in the EU wide Horizon scheme when the British government was willing to break the law and tear up the treaty it had just negotiated.
But post the Windsor Framework, the UK universities can now cooperate with other universities across the Continent, or they could if it wasn’t for the fact that the government is spending months haggling over the details of rejoining Horizon.
UK universities are desperate to rejoin, the EU wants them to rejoin and the UK government is haggling over the cost.
This government cannot even score an open goal when the opposition is cheering them on.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
