Bear with me here.
The Republican Vice Presidential candidate is worried that the UK might become the first Islamist nuclear power now that Labour is in government. Apparently he has never heard of Pakistan, and thinks the UK’s Muslim population is in charge.
Meanwhile the Torygraph is warning the UK government that it has to increase defence spending, now.
There is a link.
First, we have the Tory party rallying to the Republicans, Johnson and Truss are there at the convention, for all the good it will do them. I know that Tories traditionally support the Republicans and Labour the Democrats; but when Trump has taken over the party, why don’t the Tories just pull back a bit? Do they really want anything to do with the rapist, crook, traitor, attempted dictator and preening egotist? Can they not see that the Republicans have changed beyond all recognition and are not our friends? Do you not fear what Trump will do if elected?
Not least because he is little more than a Kremlin puppet, he will abandon Ukraine, embolden Putin and betray Europe and NATO.
So, yes we are going to have to learn to defend ourselves from Moscow and others.
It is, however, rich beyond words for the DT to claim that Labour has to act now to boost defence.
Where the hell where they when expert after expert pointed out the complete inadequacy of our armed forces, when they were cut beyond the bone, when ships and tanks were mothballed and recruitment targets never met? Absolutely nowhere, for 14 long years the Tories wrapped themselves in their union jacks and the right wing press let them slash our defences while they wittered on about sovereignty and Brexit.
Now Labour will have to sort out that mess too and more money for defence will have to be found and that extra 0.3% of GDP won’t be anything like enough, it will just buy some ammo and more training.
But Brexit is now looking far more than an act of economic madness, it is a political and defence disaster too. We need to be closer to our European allies not floating irrelevantly outside the conference rooms, sneering at Brussels.
No wonder Moscow crowed about peeling us off from the pack and yet we still have UK politicians boasting about our so-called new found independence and begging to get a photo op with Trump.
The “Hurrah for the Black Shirts” mob are back and they are in charge of the Tory party. Appeasement was never this bad.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

Absolutely outstanding piece. Deserves a huge audience. Just spot on. Thank you
Isn't the Kremlin really the one thing that unites Brexiteers of both Right and Left?
Also in the wider scheme of things, the Kremlin's influence in Iran, therefore in the activities of Iranian proxies Hamas and Hezbollah...
The Kremlin is proving adept at making useful idiots of everyone wilfully blinkered by their own puritanical political ideology.
