At the rate the UK is going we will be lucky if there is not an inter-generational schism on the way. Today’s news that unemployment is up once again contains the worrying fact that of the 3/4’s of a million fewer people in employment, almost three-fifths of this fall, has come from those aged under 25. There are doubtless even larger increases in unemployment to come.
On top of that these are exactly the same people who will have to pay off the huge debt mountain run up to tackle covid. Hopefully a sane government will let that debt wither on the vine but then this is a government with a history of slashing and burning almost anything to bring debt down. We’ll just have to hope it doesn’t make that mistake again.
The young are also burdened with student debt for courses which are not what they paid for or are missing school for long periods of time. While an ageing population votes for tax breaks for itself while eating up ever more resources in health and social care, guess who pays for that? Oh yes, and the old voted to leave the EU which the young overwhelmingly wanted to stay in, hitting economic growth, Erasmus and now we hear the ability of language students to spend a year abroad.
Maybe it is just as well the UK ended freedom of movement after all.

Lol we are wistful this morning Jonty? I presume a sane government in your eyes is a left inclined one? 3/4 of a million isn't yet as bad as it could end up.
How insane do you want? I seem to recall this whole virus issue was started by a left leaning government - but we can't say their name in case it starts World War 3. What will they dump on us next one wonders in pursuit of World domination?
A government with a responsible attitude towards incurring and repaying debt whatever next? I thought taking responsibility for one's debts was sane? Just show I was wrong.
And the old chestnut that the old voted to leave the EU! Yes we did because we recognised what was going on in the bigger picture. And your problem is the EU was found out? Things will bed in and the new normal will become established. The UK will learn to fill the gaps in thing to purchase either by self starting young entrepreneurs finding a niche or buying in from countries that do still want to trade with England. The Scots will establish a direct ferry service to Hamburg and have a direct telephone line to Berlin who will manage them with a fiscal rod of iron as part of a 28 state federal Europe. Lol. Not quite sure anymore who is sane here? 😂😂😂😂
