Just to say that if any of you had used yesterday’s blog to play “Bullshit Bingo” you would have been yelling “House” long before the Today Programme was over.
“Technical recession”, “in the past”, “turned the corner” and quite a few others were all there for you to tick off. But the one that I missed was “Rishi’s Recession” which was stupid I admit. As a hack I am always awake to the awesome advantages of alliteration.
It was all a bit pointless really, as the by-election results overnight seem to suggest that voters have decided who to blame and that no amount of talk about how this recession is shallow or short will make them change their minds.
That won’t stop the Chancellor burning the boats and salting the earth by spending every penny he can find on tax cuts, which will still not be enough to off set his previous tax rises.
It will also not stop this being a very desperate election, mainly from the Conservatives that is. But as the Reform party’s performance is showing, the problem with the Tories shifting ever further to the right and being utterly shameless and disgustingly nasty, is that it leads voters to thing that they may as well vote for the real McCoy, the Reform candidate.
The resulting squeeze on the Tories from both sides could have very interesting results, as will the growing Anyone but a Tory (ABAT) feeling in the country.
The Tories have tried to rally support by demonising immigrants, lying about Rwanda, making Kier Starmer out to be a terrorist’s friend, wrapped themselves in the flag, shafting their own green agenda and abandoning HS2.
Heaven alone knows what they will try between now and the general election. But my money is on another huge Tory scandal or implosion happening first.
The ERG defecting to Reform or a challenge to the PM, or the discovery of a Cabinet cocaine cache.
Let’s face it when you are already this weak, inadequate, wounded and unpopular, the wolves will descend on you.
They can smell victims a mile off.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

When do you think British voters will be made aware that the "Reform Party" is actually "Reform UK Party Ltd.", formerly "The Brexit Party Ltd.", with no members, and not really a Political party?

Quite intrigued by the ERG doing an SDLP turn. Look how that ended up!! Fingers crossed hubris will take its toll.
