If I hear Alan Turing’s name again I am going to throw something at the radio.
Brilliant, a genius, a major influence on Bletchley and the breaking of Enigma, he did not break the code himself and would never have claimed to have.
But when you are a third rate power you use what you can use.
In the UK’s case this is far too often its history, and a distorted history at that.
We just love living in the past, recounting the glories of the war, remembering every anniversary and so on.
I am not immune I read and study and research the subject myself.
But it gives the UK a very strange idea of its place. in the world.
We were a second rate power when the war ended, and had no hope of regaining a seat at the top table despite all the fantasies of Churchill and Eden.
And yet almost 80 years on we are still wittering on about our past and how it makes us a “leader” in some area or other.
Much of Brexit was based on this rubbish but has made it worse for the UK, as now we have to pretend that we are somehow important enough to forge ahead on our own.
These affectations used to be seen a rather silly but cute, now they are a laughable part of the UK’s foreign policy.
One day, I fear, we are going to believe our own publicity and try to sabre rattle or worse, on the international stage.
Just remember Suez, it will not end well.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

Spot on - as ever. Suez and brexit - the two most stupid bits of decision making in a fairly long history (Gallipoli? Black Wednesday? Austerity? - quite the choice)
