It is all the fault of John Major, when beset by only a handful of Brexit loving, far right, disloyal idiots in his own cabinet he famously quoted LBJ “It is better to have them in the tent pissing out than outside the tent pissing in.”
It was and remains an act of political cowardice, an attempt to put party unity ahead of national interest and a disaster. If he had fired one of two Cabinet ministers, we might have ended up with a couple of UKIP MPs for a couple of years.
But we ended up with 30 years of appalling damaging Tory civil war, we got Brexit and all the consequences. Huge economic damage, higher taxes, worst services, the madness of austerity, Boris Johnson’s lies and covid incompetence, Trussenomics, a huge loss of international reputation and respect, massive lurches to the right, obscene attempts to remove human and civil rights, less influence in the world and a new status as a laughing stock.
And still the civil war continues, now Suella Braverman wants another internal battle, to change PM, to reluctantly take over the leadership if others think she should serve.
Meanwhile the economy is in need of root and branch reform, the NHS is collapsing, schools falling down, and a thousand other problems should be claiming the immediate attention of all and every minister and MP.
The country cannot afford any more of this, 30 years and counting.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

Major obviously didn't foresee the third option of them pissing in the tent while remaining in the tent.
They were no different from the Labour Party, with its SWP sympathisers remaining and pissing in the tent, resulting eventually in the Corbyn leadership.
Unfair to Major who at least stood down fought Redwood and won overwhelming. He wouldn’t have lanced the boil whatever he did.
