The special relationship
The so called “Special Relationship” is so special that most Americans have never heard of it and many if not most American politicians only pay lip service to it (in fact quite a few have to be reminded by the State Department to mention it at all, it keeps the Brits happy).
That tells you all you need to know about the balance of power in that relationship and just how “special” it is but if you want any more evidence, our Ambassador to Washington’s job is to “get up the President’s arse and stay there”. Why this is dangerous is not just because it is a pathetic self delusion about Britain’s place and power in the world and has been since at least Churchill was last in office. But that to keep even the pretence going successfully, British PM’s have prostrated themselves before every President, no matter what their ability or beliefs.
Perhaps that is a price worth paying with an Obama or a Bush, although what the UK gains from it and why No.10 thinks that the White House really cares is a good question. But not one member of the current Government or even the last one saw President Trump for what he was, not one; or if they did they swallowed their pride and common sense and appeased him. They visited him, invited him on a State visit, lauded him, kowtowed to him and even suggested he should get the Nobel Peace Prize. Then they watched and said nothing as he preened himself, lied every day, incited treason, while he tried to destroy American democracy and undermined US power and influence in the world.
Joe Biden is obviously not as interested in the “special relationship” as his predecessors, he has a lot of bridges to repair and trust to rebuild around the world and he thinks leaving the EU was a terrible mistake. The country that put the red carpet out for a fascist President the most isn’t top of his list.
The UK isn’t looking so “special” this morning.
