The power of three
Brexit supporters seem to be splitting into three camps. There are deniers, there are the paranoid and there are rewriters of history. Many groups overlap but these are the main three.
The deniers claim that despite all the evidence Brexit is an economic triumph. They can never quite name any benefits and spend a lot of time denying the truth from respected experts but they keep on claiming all is going well.
The paranoid believe that their beautiful project has been betrayed or never tried properly and that an improbable alliance of groups is secretly working against them and democracy.
The rewriters of history are a more recent group. Apparently no one claimed Turkey was going to join the EU, or that the UK would be better off as a result of leaving. Farmers and fishermen were not lied to, we were never promised an even better deal than the Single Market, voters were told there would be costs and still voted for sovereignty and freedom.
All are, of course, different versions of the same bunker mentality. All must fade and die as reality persists and all will therefore become ever shriller and less connected with truth and reality.
Just watch the news and read the papers, supposedly serious cabinet ministers lying about growth and success stories, and ignoring facts.
They will have to go before anything really changes.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
