I have watched the Tory party’s attack video on Sadiq Khan, so that you don’t have to.
It is so laughingly overdone as to be quite funny, certainly anyone living in London wouldn’t recognise their city. But then it isn’t really aimed at them. This is a dry run for the general election campaign, and aimed at Tory core voters; gammons and Reform racists.
It is full of lies, it tries to whip up fear, blame 14 years of Tory misrule on Labour, and it is dark and threatening.
It makes me think that during the election the Tories will launch attack after attack on Sir Kier Starmer, accusing him of being a secret Corbynista and a friend if not ally of terrorists, rapists and child murderers.
Don’t forget the Conservatives have plenty of money, most of it from a some very nasty sources, and they have won by lying and frightening people before. Remember “floods of immigrants”, “Turkey will join the EU”, and a dozen others? Every one was a deliberate knowing lie, aimed at whipping up racism, fear and bigotry. Remember Boris Johnson, eventually thrown out by his own cabinet for lying? They actually want him back to help the Tory election campaign.
It would be fun to see Labour and individual shadow cabinet members actually sue the Tory party for libel, Kier Starmer alone would make a fortune for charitable causes, but then that is not how we do things in the UK.
Unfortunately this is what the Tories have learnt from their own successful lying and from Trump; the opposition will try to maintain dignity, play by the rules, and appeal to common sense and British decency. They will try to play cricket against a side that is organising a race riot in the crowd, gagging the umpire, attacking the batsmen and burning down the clubhouse.
All because the Tories want to win at any cost, at any cost to their country and its democratic system that is. A lot of that desperation is based on the amazing arrogance of a party now led by pygmies but with an ever greater belief that only they can govern.
But some seems to be based on fear, there are an awful lot of reports that need publishing, an awful lot of dodgy spending, of preferential treatment for friends, of corruption and a lot of skeletons in closets.
After 2019 the Tories thought they were in power for life and acted accordingly, they cannot afford to lose, and will therefore do anything to win.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

“they cannot afford to lose, and will therefore do anything to win” - spot on as ever. The Trump playbook redrafted for the UK. Let’s hope it ends really badly for both
