Many remain supporters continue to be amazed at the popularity of the government and of the PM in particular, they shouldn’t be. People who vote for something, especially as important as Brexit, do not change their minds easily and so far there has been little if anything to change their minds. Brexit is expected to make the British economy 4% smaller than it would have been in 5-10 years, most people will not notice that, especially in a time of covid.
Talk of loss of influence, end of freedom of movement, red tape, border checks and all the rest; do not touch their lives. Even if they do, they hit a few people, get little attention and can be blamed on the EU, teething problems or are a price worth paying.
The fact that it is difficult to interview a cabinet minister without at least two Union Jacks in the background, plays to this audience perfectly. The media they read tells them everything is fine and dandy, and if it isn’t it is a foreigner’s fault.
The by-election in Hartlepool means yet another traditional Labour seat will almost certainly fall to the Conservatives. There is therefore no domestic pressure on the government to cooperate with the EU, follow the rules it negotiated or fix the mess it has created.
Anyone wondering why the government is acting as it is, needs to realise one simple fact. They don’t think they can possibly lose a general election, and for the foreseeable future, they are right.

That is jolly kind of you to wave the white flag for the remoaners in Hartlepool before the parliamentary by-election has started. It is a nice thought that Hartlepool could be won from Labour but we all know by-elections are an intense spotlight and outcomes can be different to expected. So let's not prejudge let's see what the monkey hangers decide?
Maybe Napoleon Macron will send a spy or two? :)
