The 7 rebels who voted against their own government, in the debate on the King’s speech no less, are protesting their innocence. The only wanted to help poor, starving children, they claim. How can anyone be punished for wanting to end the misery of rickets, hunger, and hypothermia?
Except that is not what it is about really, is it?
They knew full well that they had not a chance in hell of overturning the government’s majority, that the government is keen to end the 2 child benefit limit, but has to make sure it has the money, and that any announcement will almost certainly be in the budget.
But when it does come they will now claim to have forced the government’s hand, to have pushed the party back towards Corbynite policies and saved the soul of the party. Oh, and then they will claim that it was they and only they who saved the poor starving children.
Well, funnily enough they didn’t get to end child poverty 5 years ago because they are the branch of the Labour party that was in charge then and who lost the election.
Their gratitude to Kier Starmer and the rest of the Labour party who turned that defeat around and won a huge majority, is somewhat lacking, to be polite about it.
What would have been their chances of ending the 2 child limit if the Tory party had won again? Zero, but I am sure they would have made some very angry speeches about it.
What are their chances of achieving anything now they are outside the party and cozying up to Jeremy again? Zero.
Luckily for them we are now going to witness the Tory party tear itself apart in a leadership campaign, over just how much nastier it can be, including to the poor.
If the magnificent seven want any reminder of why Labour need to be in power, they need only sit back and watch.

Quite! This is tedious student politics at its worst. Self regarding and gesture nonsense from the sidelines. Why is it that there is always one element of the labour party that seems unable to grow up and get real. Reminiscent of the People’s Front For The Liberation Of Judea
