In the run up to the local elections the Tory government holds a photo op with serving soldiers to announce a massive hike in defence sending. I am not sure what army officer approved that but they should be fired, the armed forces do not do party political broadcasts.
Meanwhile the government spin machine is busy boasting that the rise in spending to 2.5% of GDP will mean £75 billion more for defence, a figure which is only true if you assume defence spending was going to be frozen for the next 6 years. So a lie.
It is also a completely unfunded lie, like the “ambition” to abolish national insurance, which apparently can be done without also abolishing benefits, pensions or the NHS. Although the right wing rags have obviously been told it will be funded by spending cuts elsewhere, again. On top of the totally unbelievable and undeliverable cuts to government spending that are “paying” for everything else these days.
All this so the PM can claim the UK is on a “war footing”, which means what exactly? Defence spending will be slightly higher in six years time, the same time it took to fight the Second World War.
This is nothing more than electioneering using lies, and electioneering using our armed forces as Tory stooges.
Where is the money the UK’s defence needs now and where is it coming from? The government can’t answer those questions.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

Even if you assume, and accept, that all politicians are ‘economical’ with the truth this shower - post Johnson - are just outright lying scumbags and, just when you think they can’t get any worse, they pull a shabby stunt like this. To misquote Jane Austen “they’ve entertained us long enough”
I couldn't agree more, but where did you get that peculiar spelling of 'scoundrel'? Or was at a deliberate (and clever) blend of 'scoundrel' and 'scandal'? But that notwithstanding, this is another grubby attempt by the Tories to prepare the country for the general election.
