Poor, poor Kemi, what can she do? She was a Remain supporter and like nearly all the Remainers who survived in the Tory party, only did so by becoming a convert to the Brexit cause after the fact.
As my sainted mother used to say “converts are always the worse”, they have a terrible tendency to have to prove their devotion to the cause and amend for their past lack of faith by becoming ultras.
Unfortunately for Kemi she has become an ultra just when the rest of the country is waking up to the realisation that they have been conned.
She is rather like a Jesuit who is happily burning heretics at the stake for saying the earth moves round the sun and then finds the missive from the Pope saying that he was wrong all along and actually it does, has been lost in the post.
This leads her to some strange arguments, the fishing deal is the same one Frost and Johnson negotiated, and it is indeed not the one our minute fishing industry was promised, but then they were lied to. Sir Kier cannot damage the rest of the country in order to give our fishing boats what they want, any more than Johnson could because what they want is impossible. The only difference is that Johnson et al were willing to tell the industry they could have everything they wanted and more and then betray them.
Kemi is now promising again to lead them to the promised land, she obviously hasn’t clocked into reality any time recently.
This helps explain why she has led her party to 4th place in the polls, the people who could save her are not deserting to Reform, they were defenestrated by her party for telling truth to power years ago.
After years of undermining the party from within and being tolerated by weak willed appeasing Tory leaders the swivel eyed loons purged the party of their opponents the second they were in power.
A move that would have left the Bolsheviks red faced.
There is therefore no successful line of attack from the ground that Kemi and the Tories now claim as their own. She is outflanked by Reform but driven ever onward by Mark Francois.
Deep down she knows this, but she cannot alter course, return to the middle ground, attract back one nation Tories or even sound sensible.
Brexit is her curse and the Tory party’s too, and may it pursue them to the grave.
