Sorry for the pun but we are going to hear an awful lot in the coming months and years about the UK’s new global exporting triumphs. So I thought we should look at India as an example of what already happens.
Within living memory India was owned by the UK, it built its infrastructure, developed its legal system, made english its language of business and Government, and traded with it for centuries on hugely beneficial terms. Not only that but there are millions of people in the UK with links to India, who speak its languages fluently and many of whom are hugely successful entrepreneurs.
Yet total UK exports to India are worth almost $7 billion while Germany manages $15 billion. What seems to be the key is making and selling things that developing countries need, like machine tools and power stations.
But membership of the EU doesn’t seem to be a problem when it comes to exporting to India or anywhere else for that matter.
