The future's bright, the future's orange
Oh what happy days for the DUP when they held the balance of power in Westminster. It didn’t last long, they used it to shamelessly play pork barrel politics and made exactly no friends whatsoever.
And they wonder why they keep getting shafted.
This time James Cleverly and the NI Secretary Steve Barclay, seem close to a deal with the EU over the Northern Ireland Protocol. This will involve the UK backing down from its threats to tear the whole thing up, break international law and start a trade war with the EU, in return it will accept a few face saving compromises over checks at the border it put down the Irish Sea.
Hey Presto, another Brexit betrayal; my word they do come thick and fast. It is also so very strange that once the Brexit ultras get into a ministerial office they seem to change their minds so very quickly. It is almost as if facts and reality trump blind stupidity, who knew?
The DUP will scream and stamp their feet but they have very few votes and fewer friends. The real decision makers will be the ERG, will they bow to the inevitable and accept a compromise? A compromise that goes against everything they believe in.
Or they could use this as the opportunity to try to bring down Rishi Sunak, obviously a traitor, and re-install Boris Johnson.
Bringing back the man who designed, negotiated, voted through and won an election on the NIP, in order to destroy it might seem like madness, but for this lot it is just another day at the office.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
