The future is not bright, it is grey.....
According to analysis by the FT, among others, the ageing UK population means there will be 3.4 million fewer people in work by 2040. 17 years from now and not only will there be fewer workers but far more elderly people needing care.
Care jobs not being top of the career ambitions of most Brits this means we will need massive levels of immigration to look after our elderly and to fuel the economy to pay for the extra pressures on the NHS and social care budget. We should be begging people to come here.
This is a rapidly approaching tidal wave and nothing this government is doing will prepare us for it. We need more homes, more workers, more productivity, a better working labour market, better education and training and far, far more money for the NHS.
Meanwhile the older voters are the ones most likely to vote for anti-immigration policies, nimbyism and lower taxes (for them).
No one will tell them the truth, they vote. The gerontocracy is here and it is going to hurt.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
