The fog horn.....
The standards of sexual conduct in the Tory party seem to have fallen somewhat in recent years. And since the media is only capable of concentrating on one thing at a time, every scandal distracts from the important stories.
Not that several members of parliament, including the PM shouldn’t have been thrown out by now for having morals that would shame an alley cat, it’s just that the economy is not going to fix itself. These people are supposed to have a day job.
The latest trade figures are a case in point, they are just terrible but apart from the FT got very little coverage.
It is no surprise that putting test, checks, delays, and several billion pounds worth of red tape on trade with your biggest market is going to hurt business but if this trend continues, the pound is sunk.
Not only that but what it says about the competitiveness of British industry including services is frightening. The UK is falling dangerously behind because of ridiculous self imposed injuries.
In any normal time this would be the fog horn warning that would cause an immediate change of course. But no one hears it, the government because it has its fingers in its ears and the rest of us because we are bemused by the sound of ministers defending shenanigans on the chaise longue.
But if you ignore the warnings you still hit the rocks.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
