The end game is the blame game
With complete predictability the media are being spoon fed rubbish and spun like a top by the British government, as the end game of Brexit negotiations gets ever closer.
The latest line is that the French have suddenly blocked a deal and are insisting on access to British fishing grounds for the next ten years. This means if there is no deal the media can be relied onto blame Paris not London. If there is a deal the PM will be seen to have stood up to President Macron, seen off Brussels and won a Churchillian victory; while allowing EU fishing fleets access to UK waters for 6 or 7 years will be portrayed as better than 10.
None of this can hide the fact that the EU’s negotiating position; that there has to be agreement on a level playing field, enforcement of agreed rules and fishing, has not changed in years. Which means this is now totally a political matter, if the PM wants a deal it is there waiting to be signed; if he doesn’t it won’t happen.
I am afraid that calculation will involve a lot of consideration of which result will make the PM look good and look good with the Brexiteers at that.
