The blame game
It is really a game to these people. Now David Davies is claiming that the reason the UK got such a lousy deal out of its negotiations with the EU is because Whitehall civil servants were “crap” at negotiating and were too sympathetic to the EU side..
Since he led the negotiations this is quite remarkably shameless buck passing.
So let us just look at the reason why the UK got the deal it ended up with.
A. The leave campaign lied blatantly and continually throughout and therefore the deal it wanted or promised was never available.
B. Theresa May’s red lines were the most incompetent negotiating tactic ever. Once you tell your opponent what he can get away with, that is what you get. Once the red lines were published the EU told the UK the only option on the table was a Canadian style deal and that is what it got.
C. David Davies and the ERG stabbed Theresa May in the back and DEMANDED a worse deal.
D. David Davies and then Lord Frost were awful negotiators and even turned down advice from experts who knew Brussels well on the ridiculous grounds that if they knew the EU well they couldn’t be trusted. Or perhaps because the experts told them exactly what deal they would get and they were proved right.
E. Boris Johnson demanded a deal, any deal by the self imposed deadline and agreed to all the terms that Mr. Davies now objects to, as did Mr Davies at the time.
In short the liars were found out, couldn’t negotiate for toffee and were hoist by their own petard.
Now they want us to believe that it was not their fault. Strange because they also seem to think it is a triumph. Why don’t they want to share the praise and bask in the reflected glory?
Strange isn’t it?
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
