The best of both worlds
Just to emphasis the point I made yesterday about Northern Ireland having the best of both worlds, this is what it has.
Membership of the Single Market, no free movement of immigrants into NI (actually a bad thing but popular), it doesn’t have to pay for membership of the Single Market, all its citizens can apply and get Irish passports and become EU citizens and it has almost the same access to the UK market as before. Also the region has access to the excellent Erasmus+,for all its university students.
This is the deal that the whole of the UK should have been trying to negotiate, along with agreements on industrial standards and research. If Labour had any real idea of what to do it should ask, why can Northern Ireland have it all and the rest of the UK can’t?
Unless of course the government thinks that those in Northern Ireland are still slaves, EU serfs, not free, not sovereign and no longer part of the new liberated UK? But what kind of patriotic, loyal government would treat a major part of its territory like that?
