The ability to count
I can’t remember who said that the first rule of politics is, ““know how to count.” When you are trying to win elections and votes it certainly helps.
A pity that the political leaders of Cornwall seem to have forgotten this adage. They are apparently worried that the government in Westminster is cutting back on regional spending and failing to replace the money the South West used to get every year from Brussels.
The money is so important to one of the poorest regions in the country that the day after the referendum in 2016 the council demanded that Westminster guarantee that the funds would be replaced.
They seem to have forgotten that all the money that the UK sent to Brussels was already committed to the NHS instead. It was on the side of a bus, remember?
Or maybe to higher farm subsidies, that was promised as well. In fact everyone was promised more money or lower taxes or cheaper fuel and food.
The poorer regions of the UK, nearly all Brexit voting, are now faced with the mathematical reality. Cakeism doesn’t mean you can spend money twice.
My maths is terrible but even I can work this one out.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
