Teaching teachers
Guess what percentage of the necessary intake of new physics teachers have actually started training.
The figure is apparently just 17%. In coming years, if this trend continues, there will be less than 1/5th of the necessary teachers. Teachers specialising in exactly the new skills that children need to prosper.
The figures are almost equally stark for other subjects like technology, maths and computing.
But to be fair why would you enter teaching at the moment? Wages are bad, facilities decaying, the work is hard and you have had a government for 12 years that does nothing but tell you that you are a useless, woke, propagandist who is brainwashing children to be unpatriotic.
Under pay and under invest; then humiliate, undermine and demonise staff for long enough and pretty soon things stop working.
Ambulance staff are being head hunted, science teachers are in demand in a dozen industries, nurses can earn more in supermarkets, doctors can easily work anywhere in the world and top graduates can earn millions in the City rather than spending 25 years waiting to see if they can become our man in Havana.
This is what austerity really means, not a smaller state but a far worse one.
Why do you think nothing works in this country anymore?
If you want to know the answer ask a teacher.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
