Sunak's splits start now.
The government of Rishi Sunak has within 24 hours laid bare the contradictions that will doom it.
First “Mistakes have been made”, we will put them right. Let’s be quite clear, the Truss administration may have been the straw that broke the camel’s back but the mistakes have built up over 12 long years, and the current cabinet is full of people that made them, and are incapable of fixing them because of their idealogical stupidity.
Secondly, the cabinet cannot both bring in everyone necessary to heal the divisions in the Conservative party and be a cabinet of all the talents. For instance, returning the Home Secretary to her job when she was fired for a security breach a week ago is both scandalous and exposes the government’s divisions, she could not be kept out. Despite the fact that the real reason for her dismissal, her views on immigration, are extremely damaging to the country.
Finally, immigration is just one conflict of many, all on the same theme. Immigration is better for growth, better relationships with our neighbours are better for growth, the Northern Ireland Protocol is better for growth. All are hated by the Brexit ultras.
The battle between the realists and Brexit ultras is unresolvable, one wants what is good for the country, the other wants what is good for their fantasy to continue.
Many practical policies will be called treason by at least half the Cabinet, there is no unity nor compromise possible.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
