Strange victory
The PM flies to Washington and before he has even left the spin doctoring and kite flying is in top gear. We might, just might be able to get the US to agree to lift the travel ban on British visitors to the States.
Amazingly almost before the PM’s team has touched American soil the travel ban is lifted. Strangely it is not just for the UK but for the whole of the EU too.
Could it possibly be that the UK was told the change was on the way and wanted to make it look like the PM had something to do with it? For shame! If it was Boris Johnson’s influence that won it, shouldn’t we also be praising the diplomatic skill and power of Malta, Luxembourg, Cyprus and Latvia? And all the rest?
Then there is the chance of a trade deal with the United States, it is not going to happen anytime soon. Apparently the American’s are “ruthless” negotiators (who knew?) and the UK prefers to wait for a “better deal”.
You can read that two ways, either they have the UK over a barrel and were going to squeeze it for every last cent because Washington knows London is desperate. Or, there is no chance of a deal, the US doesn’t care very much about trade with the UK, the President doesn’t trust Boris and is furious about the Northern Ireland Protocol.
Or both. Either way just getting the same as Mighty Malta is not the triumph that we are being spun.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
