It used to be vote blue get green, the height of the hug a husky bullshit that helped David Cameron just about get across the line. That was then followed by 14 years of austerity, and don’t let them blame the state of the finances for that, Osborne and Cameron were perfectly clear that they planned a smaller state all along.
But apparently we have misremembered, in fact it was vote blue get red, at least two of the candidates for Tory leadership now claim that the big mistake of the Tories was to be far too much like Labour. All those cuts didn’t really happen, it was a tax and spend administration for 14 years, and the poor fools just didn’t notice and backed it all, silly them. Even Brexit must have been a socialist scheme all along, surely?
But they have learned their lesson and so next time there will be many more cuts to unspecified departments and that will pay for tax cuts.
How this is going to survive anything but the most inadequate enquiry from the media and the other political parties come an election is beyond me.
The truth is that if you want USA tax rates you have to have USA sized government. Basically the NHS has to go, or pensions or education, or defence. Salami slicing has been tried for 14 years and it has almost destroyed the state’s ability to function.
So step forward the Tory party candidates and state the truth, be brave, be honest and tell us. Which big spending department has to die?
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

Johnson and Macpherson have answered that question many times before. It’s tax not spending that is the key and it’s middle income taxes not just the broadest shoulders that will have to pay. How and with what finesse is the challenge
“State the truth”????!!! Absolutely no fucking chance of that. It may that some of them might understand the concept of ’truth’ (unlike, say, bojo) and might even recognise it if they saw it (unlike … ), but actually say it? That would have the dear old tory party members clutching their pearls and reaching for the smelling salts
