Some chance, some hope
On the Today programme this morning they had a One Nation Tory claim that the good news in all this mess is that the right wing libertarian wing of his own party was defeated the second it got its hands on the levers of power.
Well not quite, they spent 40 years taking over the party and aren’t going anywhere. Maybe the One Nation Tories should see off the militant tendency before they tell us they are back in control.
But on a happier note a survey by the Tony Blair Institute finds a large majority that wants to reset relations with the EU.
This is surely the future, ignore the screaming idiots who will fight in the last ditch to stop any cooperation, any talks with EU institutions, any role for the ECJ, no matter how remote.
Rebuild relations, simplify forms, agree on common standards, cut red tape, keep your word and trade will recover, growth will increase.
But the Tory party cannot do this, maybe it never will be able to do this. Only Labour can do this.
The One Nation Tories can meanwhile try to regain control of their party. Good luck with that because its membership are no longer One Nation Tories.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
