Sofanomics
It is amazing what government’s can do. If the opposition suddenly found the money for its policies down the back of a sofa all hell would break loose. But the government has just found a 3% “underspend” at the Department for Education, to pay for the teachers’ pay rise, or more accurately another teachers’ real terms pay cut.
How when school spending is falling ever further below private spending, teachers are leaving the sector, buildings are crumbling and pupils going hungry the Department can be “underspending” by 3%,is amazing. Surely the minister should resign because of their economic mismanagement? Fancy losing all that money down the back of a sofa and no one noticing, then realising you had had enough to pay the. teachers more all along.
Of course it is utter rubbish the cuts necessary to pay for this will fall on the education budget, apparently the nation is too poor to do anything else. But next year it will be even poorer and it will have to find this money again. You don’t just need 3% this year to pay teachers more, but every other year too.
This is therefore all built on a lie, there will be cuts to pay for these pay deals in the education budget, the defence budget, the law and order budget and the NHS’s budget.
The austerity continues, the government is salami slicing the state to death and pretending to have just “found the money”.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
