I am back after a short break, I hope you missed me.
In the real world it does not seem that much has changed. The UK and America are finally allowing Ukraine to use the weapons it is given properly, Russia is threatening to attack everyone who helps its victims and Trump is getting ready to betray Europe and Ukraine.
Now we are reduced to pretending that Nigel Farage’s best sycophantic fawning efforts make him the new Metternich. The MP for Clacton is the behemoth who bestrides the Atlantic, should be our man in Washington, will protect us from Trump’s tariffs and somehow this will be a Brexit benefit.
If you believe that I have a bridge in London to sell to you.
What amazes me is not that the right wing press push this garbage but that the so-called realists and the government cannot see the obvious conclusion.
American deterrence does not work and cannot work when the President is threatening not to turn up when needed. In fact it is an appallingly weak and dangerous policy, deterrence depends on cast iron guarantees and promises, backed up with iron political resolve and force. Trump is almost inviting rogue countries to try it on and then leave his friends and allies to suffer.
Defending itself from Russia is not hard for Europe. Ukraine has managed it for years, Poland would cut through the Russian army in days. But there are other threats out there and Trump is not to be trusted, and neither now is America.
However long Trumpism lasts, no matter who replaces him, we can never trust Washington again.
What a time to be out of the EU, ignored in Europe, poorer, weaker and now apparently dependent on Farage’s foreign policy expertise.

Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
Good to have you back: hope the break was useful?
Apropos deterrence, you are absolutely correct. NATO ceases to be a meaningful deterrent from the moment Trump’s inauguration takes effect. Buckle up!
Tricky now to find anyone we have any kind of relationship with, special or otherwise. Quite what we could send to a party escapes me - a few old Harriers, a couple of frigates, half a battalion of under-resourced infantry? Why would anyone want us to join their gang?
Welcome back - great to have a sane voice amid the madness
