So the Daily Telegraph has an interview with the leader of the EU’s Brexit team and headlines it with “Europe threatens sausage trade war”. As someone quicker than me has pointed out, where is Jim Hacker when you need him?
We will however need to get used to this stuff, this is what the future relationship will look like. The EU negotiates in good faith and a completely unreliable, incompetent and untrustworthy British government tries to get round its obligations and blames the EU for its own faults. With the media willing to whip up outrage this one will run and run, every problem is still the fault of Brussels, just as it was before Brexit.
President Biden might try to knock some sense into the British government and will be denounced if he does. Brexit’s supporters can never admit they made a complete dog’s dinner of the negotiations, that cakeism doesn’t work, their sunlight uplands are based on lies and English exceptionalism might work internally but not internationally, the law is still the law.
Creating an external enemy is necessary for the revolution, it must be maintained. This is how Jim Hacker went from Yes, Minister to Yes, Prime Minister. But this is not a comedy.
