Sad dreams.
CPTPP membership is apparently such a big deal that it means we can never re-join the EU. If you believe the Brexit ultras then it will mean that CPTPP membership is permanent, irreversible and ties the hands of all future governments.
But that is all tosh, there is a simple mechanism for leaving, you write them a letter. So it is not permanent and can be changed anytime.
The benefits of joining the CPTPP are so small that the letter might as well be written now; 0.08% higher growth versus the 4% plus hit from Brexit means this “wonderful” deal has nothing to do with economics.
The claim that this makes membership of the EU impossible for ever tells you everything you need to know. The Brexit ultras are still at work with their dark dreams.
It means nothing more than that.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
